Don’t tell Fido, but your CMS may be man’s new best friend

Are you or have you ever been responsible for managing your company’s website content? If so, you have no doubt needed to update, add or remove content. If you are not a web developer or programmer, this can be quite a daunting task. So what did you do? You found a tech guy at your company, called in a favor from your friend or called the company that built the site for you and paid them to do it. Right? Relying on other people every time you need a change to you site done can become time consuming and costly. A Content Management System can make these worries a thing of the past.

What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a piece of software that “lives” on your webserver that allows you to easily make changes to the content without having to know HTML, CSS or any other website programming language. A CMS allows you to login to the site with a username and password and administer the site. Don’t worry, if you can use Microsoft Word or any other word processor, you should have no problem using a CMS. You can create new pages, add links and upload images. There are hundreds of features like blogs, press release tools, calendars, and much more.

But I have a small business and a small website. Do I still need a CMS?

Yes, even if you are starting off small, it makes sense to use a CMS so you can move fast to change the content of your site to reflect your growing business. Most CMS packages are very inexpensive or free. DesignBy2s primarily uses WordPress and Joomla for most of the sites we build. Both of these solutions are Open Source and free to use.

Do I need any buy special software?

One of the greatest things about a CMS is that since it is running on the server where your site is hosted, all you need is a web browser and an internet connection. So you can update your site from home, the coffee shop or even on the road from your phone.

How will the CMS affect my Search Engine Optimization?

When DesignBy2s builds your site using a CMS, we pay close attention to how the site will perform both to users and to search engines. Typically a CMS will outperform a static HTML site because most everything is done for you and you don’t need to remember what to do for SEO. In addition to automatically making your pages ready for search engines, since it is easy to add content there will be more content added on a regular basis that will often result in higher rankings as well.

A word of warning

Not all CMSes are the same. Some are very easy to use, some are not. DesignBy2s focuses on WordPress and Joomla because both are easy for our clients to use and Open Source. Since they are Open Source, we can extend the functionality of the CMS by creating plugins or components. Some closed source CMS platforms do not allow you to do this very easily.
